The Joseph Benenate photograph collection contains one color image of the English Lake District. The landscape image depicts Keswick in the mid 1980s. Entitled "To Norman," the photo was given to Norman Biggart. Biggart was a 1949 graduate of RIT with a degree in photography. Photograph by RIT professor Joseph Benenate. Benenate taught in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences.

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. Joseph Benenate was born September 1, 1923 in Woburn, Massachusetts. He graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art. In 1972 he came to RIT and taught color, design, and photography in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. Benenate traveled the world and exhibited his photographs at the Vatican Library gallery, Oxford University, and the University of Glasgow.I n particular, he was known for his photos of the English Lake District.
